PCOR awards $156 million in new patient-centered health research
New CER studies address critical gaps in sleep health, mental health and developmental care, and maternal health.
WASHINGTON, December 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Center for Patient-Independent Outcomes Research (PCORI) has received more than $156 million for innovative patient-related research based on clinical effectiveness (CER), as well as research to improve methods and strengthen the science of commitment to CER. The awards will support 13 CER studies, including three focused on sleep.
“Poor sleep affects more than 50 million people United States and is linked to many chronic conditions and adverse health effects,” said PCOR Executive Director Take L. CookMD, MPH. “These patient-centered CER studies will fill important evidence gaps about interventions to improve quality sleep, helping patients and caregivers make better health decisions about this important part of life. they see.”
Among the funding awards for patient-centered CER are:

Three studies on care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), including sleep apnea treatment for people with Down syndrome, early intervention for children with and developmental disabilities and travel workshops for youth with IDD.

Two studies comparing methods of managing gestational diabetes and postpartum hypertension.

Studies dealing with hip fracture, stroke, inflammatory bowel disease, smoking cessation, intubation in adults and follow-up care for bronchiolitis in children.
Funding also supports implementation, CER processes, participatory science and PCORnet®
PCOR has also received financial awards to implement PCOR-funded CER results in clinical practice. One project will help adults with advanced kidney disease understand their treatment options, while another will combine acupuncture and massage therapy in cancer care.
Additional fees include:

$8 million for eight courses to improve CER delivery methods.

$7 million for four studies to strengthen evidence-based patient engagement with health care decision makers across the design and practice of patient-centered CER.

$134 million for PCORnet® supporting the eight PCORnet® Clinical Research Networks (CRNs) and coordinating the activities of the center.
